We admitted we were powerless over fiat, that our lives had become unmanageable... What cryptocurrency can learn from A.A.

Are you familiar with the anonymous, massively scalable, consensus based, proof of work system that, rewards its participates with user generated tokens for their membership? You might be thinking of bitcoin, yet this decentralized autonomous organization is a bit older. The answer is Alcoholics Anonymous and the tokens I refer to are the sobriety chips.

Started in 1935 with the mission of helping self described ne'er-do-well, tramps, and bums to seek recovery from alcohol addiction in a community of fellows seeking sobriety , AA has been continuously providing Person 2 Person mutual aid for nearly 80 years, without the type to top down administration and management that other stalwart, non profit aid society have required. Why has AA, which now also includes parallel ALT-organization (Narcotics Anonymous for drug addiction, Alanon for families of alcoholics, Overeater and Smokers Anonymous) lasted so long with little interference from bulky bureaucracy? The answer lies in 12 traditions of A.A. which is foundational to their success and continuance. Those in the bitcoin space would be benefited for internalizing these principles as their own ethos, are we to kick our fiat habit.

In this article I will outline the 12 traditions of A.A. (different from the 12 steps) as I see them applied to local crytpocurrecy communities or as john bush calls them FreedomCells

1- Our common welfare should come first; personal progress for the greatest number depends upon unity.

The great thing about the blockchain is that people can come to its ledger for so many different reasons. Low fee transactions, foreign remittances, ending government corruption of value transmission, dis-intermediating trade and commerce. What ever reason one comes to crypto-currency, one can find allies of all backgrounds and nationalities. The block-chain is a ledger that is created by large numbers of people attempting to overcome the Byzantine dilemma, this requires that they agree and find unity. As the opensource software behind bitcoin morps and evolves the ALTCOIN ecosystme might seem like winner take all. but as JL777 says crypto development is not a zero sum game. We must unite disparate cryptocurrencies by fostering collaboration, reward innovation, talent and active coin communities, share resulting benefits with core members and extend advantages to all cryptocurrencies

2 -For our group purpose there is but one authority - a loving God as he or she may express themselves in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants - they do not govern.

In this tech centric atheist materialist world this higher power which expresses itself through bitcoin can be seen as not just our personal religious expressions and faith traditions, but as an emergent higher power. Weather SHA256, POS, SKRYPT, X15 as Hashing speeds increase, more participants join our networks, we can see supernatural power directed at formerly insurmountable problems (protein folding, larger prime number generation) The mining pool operators, and protocol devs are but trusted servants of this power, if they disrupt the trust that they have built. the users leave.

3 -The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking.

Anyone should be able to participate regardless of their technical, philosophical, or political background.

4 - Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole.

This is the beauty of Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper. Participates in the network can choose the Merkel tree that they find most useful. If an unscrupulous actor decides to double spend and include this transaction into the ledger, each participant or mining pool can choose to fork the protocol and move to a ledger that they deem to be valid. Clams and Litecoin are both forks on the bitcoin block chain.

5 - Each group has but one primary purpose to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

Let us remember this as we help our fellow men and women to understand the evolutionary potential of bitcoin, and allow them to see the freedom that lies on the other side of fiat.

6 - An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

Recently bitpay drop their sponsorship of the St.Petersburg Bitcoin Bowl. In this author's opinion, sponsoring a major sports event with the name of an agnostic protocol is anathema to its purpose. As a cryptocurrency community we can help our fellow bitcoiners to see that though their heart was in the right place (promote promote promote TOTHEMOON!) The energy spent getting this sponsorship deal rolling could have been spent teaching grandmas and high school students how to use bitcoin in their daily lives.

7 - Every A.A. group ought to be fully self supporting, declining outside contributions.

Vulture*coughcough Venture Capital has seen a massive presence in bitcoin in 2015....(STATSTIC) But what has it gotten us? We now have massively funded bitcoin exchanges that can afford to comply with the Onerous regulatory structures that are simultaneously arising. Coincidence?

8 - Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.

The bitcoin foundation has seen many trials and tribulations in the past few years due to in part the problems of money, property, and prestige. Contrast this instead with the OpenBazzar dev team, which prides itself on working slowly as a volunteer effort on the side of their day jobs.

9 - A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

Bitcoin most likely cannot be organized,

10 - Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

Bitcoin is math. At a protocol level it is politically agnostic. Let us not corrupt its already tarnished image anymore, by supporting or opposing any attempt to promote and or regulate the internet of money.

11 - Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

This is not a commonly held practice in NEW YORK city's time square since we have been acculturated to a blitz of hyper marketing. It is not enough to be good at what you do, but rather you must excessively promote and propagate your brand identity into the sub continuous realm before you can even begin to act on the intelligence. In social circles one might be asked by a former junkie friend why said former junkie has a new glimmer in their eyes, and health about their skin and a purpose of action. This self assurance is very magnetic and has massive “organic reach” to cynically use a social media marketing phrase.

12 - Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities

The best way to judge a piece of code is not by the flamboyant tech visionary that seems to promote it. This has led us to vaporware in the past, wich did little to solve our core problems. Satoshi Nakamoto, BC Nxt, Stan and Dan Lahmer, Sunny and others in their ilk, made the code and set it free into the wild. The living principles embedded Consensus Blockchain ledgers speak for themselves if we would listen.

[a link] "COMPOSTLY A P2P biomass pickup app

  • What are your thoughts on EWWWburr? (an app spawned from the LTB community)

Making Paydirt on Ewwwbur How Chuck Marsh used the Peer2Peer composting app “Compostly” to earn serious financial capital and his plan to capture his Cincinnati community's wasted natural capital.

Trashy Beginings Chuck had always hated to see good food scraps go to waste. The intensification with his fascination with compost began after his son convinced him to attend a 6 week urban-eco-systemic regeneration workshop in Bloomington ID. In addition to organic gardening, bio-remediation, and rain catchment classes; compost was on the syllabus. After he mastered the basics of turning a pile by shovel compost quickly moved from a fascination to an obsession.

Chuck took his passion for gardening and composting to the next level when “Le Coop Noir” a french restaurant two blocks from Chucks house in the outskirts of urban Cincinnati began filling up five 28 gallon barrels of kitchen scraps every week for him. “I had never thought that I would become a garbage man, but essentially that is what I had become.” says Chuck enthusiastically.

The owner and chef of the restaurant loved the idea of “farm to table” and had been buying trays of Chuck's micro-greens for several months before Chuck suggested that their relationship intensify. “We were already cutting the guy a check for 40 bucks every other week so we figured, what's another 10 to get him to haul the bulk of our scraps away. We were already paying the dumpster service by weight, So it seemed like a good deal.” said Dan Freiensky the owner of Le Coop Noir.

The Compost Guru, as Chuck soon came to be known utilized a system called “the Chicken Tractor on Steroids” or food scraps ,processed by chicken scratching, in enclosures, that got moved periodically from yard zone to yard zone. Then the birds sweepings and bedding were processed via enclosed Vermiculture, or worm composting in bins. “I could turn the green kitchen waste into black, pay dirt, in between 2 and 3 weeks based on the temperature,” quipped Chuck proudly. “,and fishing bait to boot.”

Chuck was; despite his enthusiasm, and despite the assistance from his chickens and worm , finding it difficult to cope with the amount of waste he procured from the one restaurant. And soon there were calls asking him if he could come by and do the same thing and X, Y, and Z. restaurant in his neighborhood. “It broke my heart to think of all that rotting matter going into the landfill along with non-biodegradable pastics and toxics. I had to scale up my operation, and soon!” In addition if Chuck wanted to leave town even for more than 2 days he had to find a brave soul to drive his diesel truck to the back of “Le Coop Noir” and drag the stinky bins down a mop water soaked alley, and into the flat bed. Then back to Chucks scrape yard, close the chickens door, and rinse the bins for the next trip. “I had to plan months in advacnce to train my volunteers for that week I was gone, and it was just a headache to ever get any time off. I had to get employees or just quit.”

Enter “Compostly.” Now a mobile phone app for Web, iOS, Android, and SMS, Compostly saw its genesis as a token based crowd funding project at the community forums.

LetsTalkPermaculture was a cloned alternative implementation or “alt-token” offshoot of the LetsTalkBitcoin community. Both fell under the category of Decentralized Autonomous Media Networks (DAMNs) or Distributed Automatic Organizations (DAOs) and were built from the ground up on a platform run with “cryptocurrency” and the things enabled by user generated tokens. The suite of tools called “Tokenly” powered both platforms, and provided the underlying software framework for the token based communities.

“Tokens are like ball bearings, they aren't worth much until you build the RupeGoldberg machine that enables you to do cool things. Like pulling a string which sets off a chain reaction to make you toast or something,” said Adam B Levign CEO of tokenly and letstalkbitcoin. “We were surprised by how quickly readers and listeners of letstalkbitcoin , took the initiative to roll their own version of our site into sites of their own, solving unique problems their communities faced with, using cryptocurrency.” Permaculture and Cryptocurrency were ready bedfellows since many of the users of both ideologies were systems thinkers. The trick was how to align the incentives of the new platforms to the benefit of every platforms user.

Since the LetsTalkPermaculture network was primarily volunteer driven, roles such as article writer, editor, forum moderator, or podcaster, advertizer, marketer, legal compliance, web designer were filled by people who choose to fill those roles. The contributors were rewarded in the network’s token. These people might work on a single article, or might use the platform for years releasing a variety of content types. They all made their choices individually. But each voluntary effort formed an ecosystem of collaboration. Even listener, readers, and commenter received network tokens based on the quantity and quality of their participation.

Various podcasters, forum moderators, magazine writers, and kickstarter users, became excited about how LTP was allowing them to Integrate rather than segregate their efforts. Because LetsTalkPermaculture distributed the tokens as a user reward program, they did not run afoul of SEC regulations regarding stock offerings. However there was a way that site users could go to various centralized and decentralized exchanges and buy more network tokens ether as a way of supporting to the network, with their treasure, over time or talent, or as a way to invest in the future success of the platform. Tipping within the LTP ecosystem was a breeze, But for the most part the early adopters were more hardworking community members rather than shark toothed speculators.

Compost Coin The collaboration over Compostly began with a white paper written by an anonymous community member RotSquad2012 and submitted on April Fools Day. His paper entitled COMPOSTCOIN would seek to sort out the challenges of bootstrapping small business entrepreneurs into funding and successfully implementing their local composting businesses. If successful the entrepreneurs would help their fellow Ewwwbur drivers, fufill EPA requirements for their farms/compost sites, fund future loans to other members to maintain vehicals (many Ewwwbur drivers would choose bicycle transport and were rewarded with bonus multipliers) buy land for their urban renewale efforts. This was in part done buying back shares of COMPOSTCOIN thus feeding back into the LETSTALKPERMACULTURE network's success overall. In addition to helping to fund the urban farmers. LetsTalkCompost subforum would also offer consultation to prospective composters looking to start, finetune or to scale up their operations.

But this was more than an APRIL FOOLS day joke. CompostCoin would become the use token for the p2p composting app that would soon sweep the nation. You installed it onto your phone, or logged into the site with your browser. Then predicted how much kitchen and or yard waste you could create in a week. Then based on your answers you would be paired with a local certified (each EwwBur driver was responsible for their compliance) peer. They would co-sign the compost contract, with a volenteer arbitrator, (preferable local) and you would be in business. Payment on both sides was handled by the Compostly app and drivers could choose to be paid in Compost Coin, Euros, Bitcoins, Permacredits, Or some combination thereof. There was an early adopter advantage in that there was a finite supply of compost coin, and since the token was distributed on a predictable schedule. EwwBur drivers could plan for future business expansions based on the demand for their services.

Municipal trash hauling services began to take note, and tried many tactics to maintain their monopoly on hauling away refuse, the market pressure place on them by the Ewwbur community and massive popular public support meant that they had to start rolling out composting services as part of their city budget allocation. In cities that were too cash strapped to compete they had the added benefit of having less weight every week to haul using diesel. Chuck was using the app and the forums to become a leader in his community to transition from a fossil fuel intensive trash paradigm to a regenerative closed urban food system. And that made him feel Gewwwd.

Right because this is still the human scale bootstrapping phase. Please do. Blessed & Best

  • EP203 Journalism is Dead. Long Live Journalism

Journalism is Dead, Long Live Journalism

At some point in human history there was this thing called journalism. Perhaps it was an object (like a pamphlet or a collated stabled glossy magazine) perhaps it was an event (like a lecture or news hour) that allowed for a group of people to absorb a common viewpoint. From then on those that had listened or read had a common jumping off point to continue the discussion face to face. Let's call that thing; journalism. Journalism has had many funding models thru its history, however it now faces a crisis which will kill it. We propose a model that may save journalism.

A journalist was a person who used their knowledge and experiences in the world to craft a narrative (a story) to help people understand their world. They interviewed people face to face, or corresponded in text, collecting facts and subjective impressions, then they would compile these facts in their mind or in a notebook. They would uses these impressions to then paint a picture of what reality was like.

These people became very important as they would release their message to the world in the form of public speeches or printed pamphlets Shards of these words would then filter into the stories that people would circulate amongst themselves at work sites, breakfast tables, and bar-room political debates. The nature of a successful journalist was to be someone who could speak compellingly about a subject, (engaging to hold the attention of the reader or listener). In addition if the journalist sought long term credibility (as someone who could be trusted to present the facts in an “objective way”), the journalist had to craft rhetorically robust arguments, fleshed out with facts gleaned in an unbiased manner. This did not always occur.

If someone was to practice the craft of journalism in their life as a profession they would need to sort out the logistic or financial support necessary to pursue this craft while also eating, enjoying shelter, and providing their family with the comforts enjoyed by populations around them. Lets look at several ways in which this was accomplished by journalists.

    1. Church journalism, spoken sermons from the pulpit, or newsletter written and published by lay people and clergy, were delivered because it was their mission from god, to speak the words that were in their heart and minds, proselytizing to the people they sought to entrance. These churches asked the people listening and reading to set aside 10% of their cash, or products of labor, (a tithe) to fund not only the journalistic mission of the church, but also the architectural and humanitarian aims of the same religious body. Journalists in this models are incentivized to reproduce the words that are most appealing to their target demographic, (the church itself). Editorials and viewpoints critical to the values of church at large were at best tolerated (with gnashing of teeth) at worst declared heresy; (causing the clergyman to tone down his or her rhetoric in the pulpit or go find another church.)
    2. Governmental journalism was produced during the fascist third riche era of German journalism; newspapers, radio news hours, and films, were subsidized by the Nazi party to promote viewpoints favorable to the fascist government of the time. Journalists were paid handsomely to give first hand accounts of the squalor and filth of marginalized populations, creating the impression amongst the readership that these marginalized groups were thus in need of “reform.” After the fall of the Nazi party, and during the united states subsidized rebuilding of Europe (the Marshall plan) journalists and publishing houses were given state funds to promote a “free press.” This was an equal opportunity program, which continues to this day. Many democratic socialist governments continues to support papers and news hours of many different viewpoints across the political spectrum. (far left to far right) However in the face of neoliberal/neoconservative politics, (the slashing of institutional budgets while simultaneously allowing the wealthy to disproportionally shed their tax burden. Causing unemployment for working class tax payers in a destructive feedback loop) who knows if this socialistic media subsidizing can continue.
    3. Advertising subsidized journalism in the hyper-capitalist unitedstatesofamerica has for the longest time maintained a rocky co-dependent relationship. The content that brings the readers/viewers; acquires the advertisers most willing to compensate the platform for those same eyes and ears. Various media platforms have more or less advertisers according to the tastes of their audience (Vogue Magazine is ¾ ads, while National Public Radio devotes 5% of the time to ads {if you do not count the fund-drives}) For a many years this allowed these platforms to devote their time and resources to journalistic travel (to find hard-hitting international stories) editorial excellence, and professional presentation (slick covers and prompt daily printing) But at the same time it gave the advertisers a varying modicum of editorial control over the medium, corporations could always threaten to remove their sponsorship of the platform if certain stories where not removed or modify to adhere to the values of the self-same corporation Increasingly as the advertisers are able to “disentermediate” and engage with their audience directly thru WorldWideWebTrafficAnalysis, via social networks, e-mail, and search histories; advertisers are finally able to leave the co-dependent relationship they once had with news platforms behind. Admen prefer a cheaply placed targeted ad, which sits directly next to the faces of your friends and loved ones. Relegated to the margins (pun intended), Journalism seems now only able to pander to the lowest common denominator. (If it bleeds, it leads), as it seeks the last remaining eyes and ears. Reporters and News people scramble to flesh out a narrative for people to believe in, as most of their former-coworkers are left unemployed or make it as part time bloggers without a guaranteed income.
    4. Volunteer-ism has produced much journalism. And as the distribution cost (via WWW) begin to approach zero, citizen journalists can reach larger and larger audiences. Just as in the example of the church, volunteer bloggers have stepped up to the plate, to speak the words that they find sitting in their minds and on their hearts. They do so as a gift and release their gift to the world without a need to be compensated. Neighborhood newsletters seek to keep a small communities engaged in the events of their co-inhabitants, and printing and distribution are funded by donations or home owners association fees. Zine writers hack KinkosMachines to distribute their pamphlets to friends and loved ones, sharing stories in a DIY ethos. Pod-casters lend their voice to the web hoping that the things that are said will inspire unknown strangers around the world. Perhaps the gifts given to the world, returns to these various volunteer in the form of a donation or new opportunities. However these volunteer journalists cannot always sustain their level of output, as it takes their time and attention away from fulfilling their logistic and financial needs. Besides why do what you love for free, when you can do something you hate for a paycheck. (sarcasm)

So, no one goes to church anymore, the government is bankrupt, advertisers threw the baby-out with the bathwater and volunteers cannot compete with the voluminous and obnoxious drivel that passes for “main stream media” these days. JOURNALISM IS DEAD!

    ! long live journalism !

We of the DECENTRALIZED ATONOMOUS MEDIA NETWORK (hereafter known as the D.A.M.N.) seek to bootstrap a new media landscape that is based on patterns found in living ecosystems, which is too say. Energy in ecosystems tends to stay in the system unless acted on by a parasitic force (erosion extraction) Disruptive media Eco-systems, in a distributed media landscape need pioneer species to hold denuded vitamin and mineral poor soil, and establish photosynthetic pathways from which and into which new nutrients can cycle. To make this less abstract we will make it simple for the audience.

We pay our writers, and speakers because they have work very hard to externalize the messages they have sitting in their hearts and in their minds. We pay the writers because we want them to utilize their unique voice, language, cultural niche’s perspective to help us come to a common understanding of reality, we want them to be well fed and have a roof over their head.

We pay the publishers, because they put themselves at risk releasing our words. Authoritarian regimes around the world increasingly seek to choke off free speech and free assembly through violence. Security culture is not free (though through our collective efforts this cost can approach zero). We pay our publishers because they put time, talent, and energy into creating beautiful objects and experiences that will help people to internalize the messages of our writers and speakers.

We pay the readers, because they are just as much a part of our medium, as the writers and publishers are. We pay the readers because in the world of non-stop information and 24 hour news cycles, (where the cost of releasing mindless drivel and thoughtless dis-empowering propaganda, approaches zero) we seek to tip the balance. At some point our magazines had cost money, then they were free. Now we at the DAMN seek to pay our readers, knowing full well that other propaganda machine will follow suit, or risk irrelevancy, but we will be first! Thus establishing an important ecologic foot hold as pioneer species

Now we must define “PAY” There is an inherent risk in using the old linga de provencia (paper of the state) to pay the organisms in our media ecosystem. This risk is that the monopoly old central bank regimes have over the financial system, will be used as leverage against our fledgeling media network. So henceforth we will utilize a transmutable symbol (only peripherally connected to central bank issued fiat currencies, or old regimes of compensation (unpaid media internships)), to PAY our organism.

The new symbols will be included in this very pamphlet that you hold in your hands. Not only does it represent an un-banked note (which can be exchanged for goods and services), but it is also the portal into which you can encode future ideas, visions, disruptive impulses, and it is also your key to our distribution network. The tools that runs this newsletter, and future speech patterns, are simple ones. This tool is older than the printing press, the typewriter, the PC, the mobile computing device, or the cognitive implant (though all of these tools aid in its deployment) This tool is the prime number. (a number only divisible by one and itself)

PRIME NUMBERS! I pick a prime, you pick a prime we multiply our primes by a previously agreed upon 3rd prime and BandaBingBandaBoom, we've generated a symbol that is easily proved valid and difficult to back track to find the seed of. (If this doesn't make sense yet do not fear) Those forces which would seek to neutralize the potency of our DAMN message (including our own internal parasites) will be prevented from doing so by the fact that... ALL PRIMES ARE SACRED. (we are protected by that which is sacred; (our higher power))

So have we aroused an eager anticipation in you? (confusion counts.) You are now excited to engage and actively participate in the new paradigm that will propagandize first your own mind, then the minds of those around you to the emergent possibilities of the world unfolding around you? What aspect of the DAMN will you engage with? Will you be a writer? Illustrator? News Anchor? Public Speaker? Citizen journalist? Printer? Advertiser? Technician? Nutrient Hyper-Accumulator? The possibilities are possibly endless.

But lets be practical. Lets be real, First we must recognize each other. Starting small and spiral outward, we will build from our own success. Start by make 5 copies of this pamphlet Change the primes atop or don't. We don't want one person printing 10,000 copies, we want 1000 people printing 10 copies, We don't want a speaker with 500,000 people in a lecture hall we want 100,000 people telling their 5 best friends. We don't want one world currency, but a world which is so abundant we don't need to pay for anything.

The keys to our communications is to use our unique perspective to crowd out those old world ideas which seek to impoverish our imagination, (leaving us cynical and neutralized) And replicate and propagate those memes which help us imagine grassroots solutions, to global systemic problems.

We bifurcate like an antibiotic resistant colony of bacteria and yeast, in symbiosis with its host. Not knowing where one stops and the next begins.

Someone you know is doing it right now! Help them, join them, and join us. Thank you for your Time Attention and Help. Claim your Readers Credits by going too, the Prime atop this page. Love, the Decentralized Autonomous Media Network.
