On Thursday, April 29th, Spare Key launched Doge4Housing – a campaign to raise 11 million Dogecoin to fund rental and mortgage grant payments for at least 5 Minnesota families.

The campaign – Doge4Housing – was envisioned by our Director of Crypto Currency Development – Roerick Sweeney.

We set up a site where Doge4Housing would be situated – we created a Doge4Housing Facebook page – we reached out to Dogecoin enthusiasts – issued press releases – and hunkered down to see what would happen.

Using the philosophy that the crypto currency community should “Think Regionally, Act Locally” we set out to show that the Dogecoin community could impact global initiatives as well as those right next door to where we all live.

We anticipated that the community would be generous and planned on the pilot project initiative taking about two weeks or so to fully fund the effort.

Imagine our pleasant shock – and awe – when we raised the 11 million in Dogecoin in barely 24 hours.

Humbled.  Stunned.  Grateful. And, excited!

In January Spare Key embarked on an effort to see if we could be a part of the growing crypto currency community and economy.

We began accepting Bitcoin first – and then, with the help of Moolah, we expanded our capacity to Dogecoin, Litecoin, Vertcoin and a handful of other alt coin currency platforms.

We have received local, state and national attention for our efforts – secured hundreds of new Twitter followers – as well as more than 300 Facebook “Likes” for our Doge4Housing Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Doge4Housing/285178108316322

11 million Dogecoin in barely 24 hours doesn’t just happen.  It happens because there’s a community committed to showing the power of crypto currency to improve the world.

In fact, I was on a bike ride on Friday in Minnesota when I received a call on my cell phone.  It was Alex Green, Founder and CEO of Moolah.  Imagine my surprise when he told me that he was committing a donation of his own personal funds in Dogecoin – not company money – but personal funds to help us hit our goal.

Along with Alex and more than 100 other donors we were able to hit our goal sooner and with a level of enthusiasm that has become the hallmark of the Dogecoin community.

So, what’s next?  And where do we go from here?

Spare Key, www.sparekey.org, helps families and their children who are battling every conceivable illness or injury you can imagine.  Our work is ongoing because the need doesn't end.

We believe the future of crypto currency is going to be largely determined by the credibility it can have as a force for good in our community.  The cynics and the doubters see no future for a currency that isn't rooted in a central bank or regulated and governed by a government institution.

We disagree.

We believe that the more the crypto currency community -- regardless of its focus or coin or currency of choice -- can demonstrate the power of helping families "Bounce and not Break", the more widely accepted it will continue to be for both charitable endeavors -- but day-to-day commerce, as well.

We ended the week last week amazed at the power of Dogecoin and the Dogecoin community.

We begin this week prepared to be amazed at what can be done to help others in North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Wow so grateful.  Wow so amazing.  Wow so powerful.
